Baitullah Mehsud’s aide arrested in city

KARACHI: An alleged close aide of Baitullah Mehsud – a senior Taliban leader who was killed last year – has been arrested from Karachi, officials of the Anti-Extremist Cell (AEC) of Sindh police’s Crime Investigation Department claimed on Tuesday.

The AEC officials said Suleman Mehsud alias Gul Shah alias Naik alias Lal Khan was affiliated with the banned outfit Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan, and a special AEC team had made the arrest from Bin Qasim Town after raiding the area on a tip-off.

Two kilogrammes of potassium nitrate, around 20 metres of detonation wire and a TT pistol was also recovered on Mehsud’s indication; and the investigators are looking for his companions who are hiding in the city, the officials added.

AEC chief SSP Omer Shahid said Mehsud was also involved in the kidnapping of Mazhar Hussain, general-cum-project manager of an international non-governmental organisation ACTED (Agence d’Aide à la Coopération Technique Et au Développement).

“In May 2009, Mehsud and others kidnapped Hussain from Rajanpur and took him to Ladha in South Waziristan by road via Dera Ismail Khan and Dera Ghazi Khan,” he added.
