Curfew imposed after religious unrest in India

An indefinite curfew has been imposed in parts of the southern Indian city of Hyderabad after one person was killed in religious unrest.

More than 75 people have been injured in clashes between Hindus and Muslims in the old city area that began on Saturday night.

One person, travelling in a van, was stabbed to death by a mob on Monday.

Federal paramilitary forces have been sent to the city, which a major technology hub.

Police said sporadic clashes between Hindus and Muslims had been reported from the Aliabad, Lal Darwaza, Gowlipura and Shahalibanda areas of the old city.

More than 100 people have been arrested in connection with the clashes, which began with some people protesting over the putting up of some religious flags near a place of worship, the police said.

Hyderabad, capital of Andhra Pradesh state, is an IT hub of southern India and home to firms like Microsoft, Google and Dell.
