Girl flogging issue echoes in Senate again

ISLAMABAD: The girl flogging episode in Swat last year once again echoed in the Senate on Tuesday, following a news items that the incident was ‘fake’ and a demand was raised for the re-investigation of the matter.

On a point of order in the Senate, Senator Prof Khursheed Ahmad pointed out that according to a media report, the video shown a few months ago about the flogging of a woman in Swat by the Taliban was fake and was prepared by an Islamabad-based NGO for defaming the country.

He demanded that this matter needed to be investigated as it defamed the country and the Islamic forces. He said when this video appeared, it was noticed that the girl was wearing the clothes that were not usually worn in winter of Swat. It was also illogical the way the girl left the venue after being flogged.

Interior Minister Rehman Malik assured him that he would take up this matter with the provincial government and would submit its report to the house. However, Chairman Senate Farooq H Naek directed Interior Minister Rehman Malik to investigate the matter and submit report in the house on Friday.

President Supreme Court Bar Association Qazi Anwer also came under criticism on his outburst against the parliamentarians as on Tuesday PPP President Balochistan Senator Haji Lashkari Raisani raised the issue and said in Quetta Qazi Anwer once again attacked the parliamentarians and dubbed them as smugglers and dacoits. “Qazi Anwer himself is a lawyer of smugglers and dacoits,” he added.

He said Qazi Anwer did not have a right to declare the parliamentarians as smugglers and it seemed that someone was using him. He demanded of the Supreme Court to take suo moto notice of the outburst of Qazi Anwer against parliament, which the supreme body. “If the Supreme Court is really independent, it should take notice of outburst against parliament,” he added.

On another point of order, Senator Haji Adeel raised the issue of water theft of the NWFP, saying that the NWFP water was being utilised but never paid any penny. He said though the constitutional committee proposed amendments in article 151 of the Constitution, yet it would be materialised when parliament endorsed the amendments.

Senate Chairman Farooq H Naek directed the Leader of the House, Syed Nayyer Hussain Bukhari, to ensure the presence of Minister for Water and Power Raja Pervez Ashraf on Wednesday to give a reply to the concerns of the senator.

Through another point of order, Senator Haroon Akhtar Khan raised the issue of a news item in The News under the caption,”$1 billion scam lands in the federal cabinet’ and demanded that the matter should also be investigated through Senate House Committee on Petroleum and Natural Resources.

Leader of the House Syed Nayyer Bukhari said Minister for Petroleum and Natural Resources Syed Naveed Qamar presented himself for probe through the National Assembly’s Standing Committee on Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Resources, so the government had no objection if the Senate House Committee also probed it. Earlier, the Senate passed a bill to amend the National School of Public Policy Ordinance 2002. It has already been passed by the National Assembly.
