* Senior police officer was posted as an attaché for 3 years
* Officer ‘quietly recalled’ after RAW monitored his activities

NEW DELHI: Close on the heels of the arrest of Madhuri Gupta for allegedly passing on confidential information to Pakistani sleuths, another Indian official posted in the Indian High Commission in Islamabad has been called back on suspicions of spying. The official, however, was not arrested like Madhuri was. Without disclosing his name, sources said he was a senior police officer of the Tamil Nadu cadre posted in the high commission as an attaché for the past three years. He has been put on “compulsory wait” – he will not be assigned new duties until the investigation is completed.

They said he has been quietly recalled after a counter-espionage wing of the Indian intelligence agency, RAW, monitored his movements and conversations in Islamabad for six months. An intercept of his telephone conversation got him into trouble and he was immediately brought back to New Delhi.

RAW has provided data on the officer’s movements and investigations are being carried out in Delhi, Chennai and his native place in north India, to verify his antecedents, as intelligence agencies suspect his association with Pakistan’s intelligence network.

Madhuri Gupta, posted as the secondary secretary at the Press and Information Department of the Indian High Commission in Islamabad, has already caused embarrassment to both the Indian intelligence agencies and the External Affairs Ministry. She has maintained she is innocent and is being framed.

The diplomat had been caught by the Indian intelligence agencies after she allegedly started taking interest in matters beyond her scope. Convinced that she had purportedly been passing on discrete information to a Pakistani handler, the authorities called her to the capital under the pretext of holding discussions. Subsequently, she was arrested by the Special Cell of the Delhi Police.
