Govt committed to fighting terrorism, says Gilani


* PM asks Khyber Pakhtunkhwa govt to take all political parties on board regarding security situation and development efforts

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistani government is firmly committed to combating terrorism and militancy, which are hampering the country’s economic development, Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani said on Wednesday.

The PM expressed these views while chairing the meeting of the Strategic Oversight Committee to review the security situation and progress of development projects in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and FATA at the Prime Minister’s House.

The PM said the people of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and FATA had made unprecedented sacrifices in the war on terror. Their courage
and steadfastness, he said, had greatly helped the security forces and law enforcement agencies in fighting the terrorists.

The PM stressed the need to fast-track the process of reconstruction and rehabilitation in the areas cleared of militants.

Development in these areas, he said, should be obvious enough for all to see so that the locals gain confidence, which would help them.

On board: The PM directed the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government to ensure that all political parties are taken into confidence regarding ongoing development and rehabilitation projects, and the security situation in the province.

He asked the provincial government and other organisations involved in the rehabilitation of the internally displaced persons (IDPs) and reconstruction in Malakand and FATA, to ensure transparency in the disbursement of compensation funds.

Earlier, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa chief secretary and the FATA additional chief secretary briefed the meeting on the law and order situation in their respective areas as well as the progress on the development work, the resettlement of the IDPs and the capacity building of law enforcement agencies.

They informed the meeting that the IDP’s resettlement and the development projects in Malakand, Swat and FATA were moving forward at a satisfactory pace while the pace.

The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa chief minister apprised the PM about his interaction with the locals of different areas of the province, to help resolve security issues and for speeding up the process of development.

The governor of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa also briefed the meeting on the prevailing security and socio-economic conditions in the province in general and FATA in particular.
